How to cut out images in Photoshop

Category : Beginner`s Lounge · by Jul 19th, 2012

This tutorial will show you how to cut out an image. The Crop Tool in Photoshop can only be used to cut images into squares or boxes but it won’t allow you to cut an object perfectly and without the background. This is often not the right tool to use because there is no erase or delete options for and it will also resize your image. Here’s a better way to do it!

In Photoshop, a tool called Lasso will help you to crop neatly. There’s a plain Lasso Tool if you want to control it, a Polygonal Lasso Tool if you’re good in drawing lines and Magnetic Lasso Tool if you don’t want to click your mouse; just let the magnet point drop like magnet balls.

Before using the Eraser Tool, right click to use the Feather Selection and change the feather size to 3 to 5. Make sure it will not touch the edge too close.

To go back or to redo it quickly, press command Ctrl + Alt + z. It will move backward and you’re free to edit the whole image again unless it was flattened.

What is a Flatten Image option?

This option will discard all layers you have added and will make it into a single image. If flattened, the back ward option isn’t useful anymore.

When using Feather, adjust the size until the background is completely erased. The Magic Wand Tool can also do the same.

When done, you can now place your cropped object on another layer with a new background.  Save your work in PNG format and it can be used as a clip art.  With cloud computing and virtualization, you can print these images from anywhere.
