Category : Beginner`s Lounge · by Jul 18th, 2012

Did you know you can customize your own wallpaper? You can use it as your desktop wallpaper, phone lock screen or as a phone theme. If you’re tired of searching for unique, cute, classy or clean and simple wallpapers for free online, why not explore Photoshop and discover your skills? Get creative, find your own style and create! Let’s get started.

Here are the exact measurements to fit your individual screen:

  Desktop is 1600×1200 pixels

  iPad is 1024×1024 pixels

  iPhone is 320×480 pixels

iPhone/Android lock screen is 71×47 pixels

To start, open your Adobe Photoshop CS3 or Cs4. Prepare your clip arts and your first layer.

You can add more layers if you want before starting or while lay outing.

Why layers are useful?

Layers in Photoshop are like book pages. When you turn to the next chapter, you’ll see the next content. Always separate layers that are not connected.

By way of illustration, you placed an image in Layer 3.  You need to click the layer to move it without making any changes to another layer. If you know how to use Microsoft word, it’s like inserting a picture using Behind Text or front of text layout option. If you want layer 2 to be placed first, transfer layer 2 above layer 1 and the image placed there will show at the top of it.

Select the Colour Picker (foreground colour) option and choose colours to use as a background or you can place another image. Adjust Opacity to make it look lighter than your second layer and when fixed, you can flatten the image to lock or to turn it into a single image but once you did this move, you can’t undo layers anymore.

Add Clip Arts or draw a box and shapes to design your wallpaper using the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Leave all the separate layers you have added; if you want to add shadow and other effects, just click your mouse to the layers where it was placed.

If you like it transparent, just look for the Opacity option to blend.

Click the EYE symbol to delete a layer and press Shift to resize the image.

To match your clip arts and background, use the Eye Dropper tool to select colours.

Finally, click on the Horizontal Type Tool to add your text. Again, add another layer and place it there.

Click the layer where you placed it and select options like; drop shadow, outer glow and etc.

If you liked your artwork, you can adjust  the image size to fit your desktop and phone screen.

The 1600×1200 size images can also be used in projectors or slideshows.
