Create a cylinder shape that you can use as an icon using Photoshop and few tehniques.

Cylinder icon tutorial

Step 1

Create a new document whatever the size. I used as a background a gradient like below. Create a new layer and grab the elliptical tool, blue colour and make an almost oval shape:

Step 2

Add a Drop Shadow with the settings below:

Now go to Layer – Duplicate layer, move the layer around 10-20 pixels

Add the following blending options:

And stroke:

Step 3.

Now you are going to make the walls of the cylinder. So select the top layer ( Press and Hold CTRL+click the layer) and using the elliptical marquee tool with the settings below draw a smaller circle untill only that part is selected like the second picture below:

Fill the selection with a gradient of 3 colours of blue like below:

Repeat Step 3. For the bottom part of the cylinder:

Step 4.

Select the top layer add a Bevel and Emboss like below to add shine to the top of the cylinder.:

Let`s add more shine, so create a new layer and using the elliptical marquee tool create a shape like below and use a gradient like the second picture below and lower the opacity untill you get a result like mine. ( Right click this new layer – Create clipping mask – for the shine to apear only over the top of the cylinder. )

This is the final result :

First select the top part of the cylinder ( Ctrl+Mouse Click on the layer thumb) and then using the eliptical marquee tool set on subtract for selection draw a smaller circle underneath untill (hold ALT+SHIFT+MOUSE CLICK to make the circle perfectly round.) untill the only selection is on that part. I hope is was clear enought.

        Check the link below :
        http://img861.imageshack.us/i/explain.jpg/

-You first draw the first circle ( CIRCLE 1 )
-Then with the eliptical marquee tool with the settings included in the link draw another circle (CIRCLE 2) over the first circle 1 and then selected will remain only the banana shape.

Let me know if you need further guidance.
